What applies to EV charging in South Africa

Installing an EV charger in South Africa is mostly governed by existing electrical and property law rather than EV-specific rules. A new charger circuit needs a Certificate of Compliance from a registered person. In a sectional title scheme, trustee consent and sometimes a resolution of the members are required. Adding solar may need municipal registration. Direct incentives for EV chargers are limited. Each page below summarises one topic, cites its sources and shows when we last reviewed it.

  • Certificate of Compliance (CoC) for EV chargers

Adding an EV charger circuit is an addition to your electrical installation, so the new work needs a Certificate of Compliance issued by a registered person. Here's what the regulations say, and what we couldn't confirm.

  • Body corporate approval for EV chargers

There is no EV-specific law for sectional title schemes yet. Approval runs through the general rules on common-property improvements, metering and conduct. Here's a sourced summary for owners and trustees.

  • Solar, EV chargers and municipal registration

We found no municipal rule specific to installing a private EV charger. Solar systems connected to the grid are a different matter: municipalities such as City Power and the City of Cape Town require applications. Here's what the sources say.

  • EV tax incentives and allowances in South Africa

South Africa currently offers very few direct incentives for buying or installing an EV charger. Here's what does and doesn't apply, including the section 12B solar allowance and the 150% EV production allowance.

  • Electricity tariffs and EV charging

There's no special EV tariff from Eskom or municipalities that we could find. What you pay to charge at home depends on your normal tariff, and time-of-use options can reward charging off-peak.
